Haven’t played LARP before?  Don’t have a character?

No worries!  New players are very welcome – whether new to LARP entirely, or just new to Dantir.

The GMs will work with you to make a character unique to you.  Or you can choose from our range of pregenerated characters to avoid the difficult choices and just plunge right in.  Contact us by email (see contacts page) to start your journey.

Our games are heavily character and story driven, which means it is very easy to become involved in the plots.  There are stories going on all around you at events, whether that be a day game or a full weekend event.  You don’t need to know everything there is about the world, or to read all the books ahead of the game (although that might help inspire you).

Most importantly, we do our best to ensure a friendly and welcoming atmosphere.  The GMs and the other players will help you learn the rules and the world as you play at your first event. We can also lend costumes and weapons to new players – so all you need to start LARPing is you!

Development of Dantir: Beyond the Stones

Dantir: Beyond the Stones premiered in July 2014.  The game and story is ongoing at this time.  The text below is a short blog about the development and vision for the game, written before its premiere.

The creation of our entirely new fantasy game setting has been a long process.  We had been inspired for some time to run a LARP, through various experiences with local Victorian LARPs, NERO and Lorien Trust overseas, and our experiences running Legend of the Five Rings and other original freeform type LARP events at Conquest, GenCon, and other conventions. We first started discussing running a LARP in 2010, and by the end of 2010 we had been well into writing the rules structure.  One thing and another lead us to decide to run the Legends of the Five Rings LARP first, while still developing our fantasy game setting.  L5R premiered in 2012, and we have run over a dozen successful L5R LARP events (to 2014).

However, fantasy has not been forgotten in all this time.  By not rushing the timeframe, taking the time to work out the issues that we have with our rules system and giving ourselves the time to get our weapons, props and armour ready; when the time comes our fantasy production will be as good as we can possible deliver. We hope to bring you a game that will be rich, diverse and enjoyable and most of all well prepared. This does not mean an end to L5R!  We have a long term story plan for the L5R game, which will not be ended before its time.  Fantasy and L5R games will run in parallel, with events for both storylines run each year.

The fantasy game has a rules structure similar to that currently in use for the Chimera Productions L5R game.  However there are many differences to suit the different setting.  The setting and mythos of the world is actually the part that is taking a long time to develop – there are so many details required in writing your own setting.  We must admit to drawing on experiences and elements from many other LARP settings, fantasy literature and of course real world history and examples.  However, we hope the product that we deliver is familiar enough for any fantasy fan to jump right in to, but original enough to be interesting and unique. There are elf and dwarf and human characters (but these all have our own twist).  There are  orcs and goblins and monsters to fight.  There is magic, which has some flexibility of choice so that mages can choose their focus.  There are gods watching over the world, and nations to fight for.  And there will be story – exploring legend and myth, current politics and intrigue, mystery and discovery. We look forward to seeing you there in 2014!
